One thing that I've been looking into lately are blackout Roman blinds, you know the type that has blackout material attached to the back side of the blind, so that when your blind is completely closed, or pulled down it doesn't allow light to seep through the blind into the room.
The main room I'm interested in putting this in at present is our guest room. It's due for some new blinds, mother-in-law is about to come for a visit and she's a very light sleeper. So, I thought Roman blinds would look great in the room, but they'd also have to keep out the early morning light or I'll have a crotchety mother-in-law to deal with!
From my research it seems that providing the roman blinds are measured and fitted inside the window frame it should work out okay, and should keep out much of the morning light. Of course, the days are getting longer and the sun isn't up as early as it used to be, (when it shows itself that is), but still I think buying blackout roman shades is a pretty good idea. Guess we'll see how effective they are in another week.

Buy Plantation Shutters Online
There is a lot of controversy as to whether you should shop for plantation shutters online or not. Some people feel that you should only buy blinds from an actual shop where you can go in, look over the items, and then make a choice based on what you actually see. I agree, there is definitely merit to that, and with some items I am personally much happier doing things this way.
An alternative, if you want to first of all see what you're getting, is to go and visit a shop, look at the blinds and decide based on the samples you see and you use, what you would like to buy and then go back and buy them online.
My reason for buying online is simply that you can often find better bargains online than you can by buying from the local blinds store. Of course, that is not always the case and certainly if I were to find a shop that sold blinds at a cheaper price than I could find online and they were what I was looking for, I would definitely buy them!

Plantation Shutters
The original plantation shutters, as they were used in the early days in American history, were crafted from whatever hardwood could be found on the plantation. They were made to protection the houses from hurricanes and dust storms or other poor weather.
These types of shutters today are still often made from hard wood, such as cedar or Aldar wood. They are also made from a broad spectrum of other materials as well, including plastic, vinyl, and faux wood. Naturally, all wood plantation shutters are generally a bit more expensive than the other types of shutters, and oftentimes people will choose faux wood over real wood. One thing to be aware of though, if you are considering faux wood, is that it is actually often heavier than the original wood.
No matter what you decide to have your plantation shutters made from, the whole wood experience--whether real wood, or faux wood, is the best when it comes to plantation shutters. Real wood can crack, warp or fade but it is a lot easier to care for!

Sad Reminder on Curtain Safety
Every year hundreds of young children lose their lives, or suffer serious injury due to their getting caught up in curtain strings and being strangled. I just read a touching news article about one women who's child died from getting caught up in a curtain string, who is trying to do something about warning others of the dangers of curtain strings.
Read her story 'Crusader tracks toll of kids strangled in blinds' I guess remote controlled blinds aren't so bad after all. I tend to scoff at them a bit, because I think all the remote control appliances people use just make us lazy. Here is a good reason for one though.

Toscana Roman Blinds
Favorite Toscana roman shades have an amazingly large choice of both fabrics and colors available to choose from. Naturally, being one of the leading roman blinds, they offer flat, hobbled and European styled Roman blinds. Their choice and the quality of their fabric is undeniably some of the best on the market, and their choice of patterns is great. Of course, they're not the cheapest Roman blinds you can find, but if you have money to spend on curtains and blinds, investing in Toscana roman shades is a good choice.
There are many other different brands and selections of roman blinds on the market too, so you don't have to limit yourself to looking at only one or two types. There should be something for everyone's budget. If you're feeling particularly handy, it is even possible to sew and make Roman blinds yourself, where you get to choose whatever type of material you like!

Roman Blinds Online
It is definitely possible to buy very good types of Roman blinds online, at very affordable prices these days. A simple online search with one of the more popular search engines should show up a slew of sites offering roman blinds for sale and from there you can look around and see what type of blind you are interested in.
One brand of roman blind that I like a lot is the Riviera blinds. They sell both blockout and normal roman blinds, as well as some that only partially keep out the light. These light translucent blinds are gorgeous, especially in a room where you want soft lighting. You can close the curtains and still have soft filtered light coming into the room--it can be quite stunning, for example, if soft golden light diffuses into the room.
Block out Roman blinds are a popular choice for bedrooms, especially children's rooms as they can quite effectively cut way back on the amount of light coming into a room during the daytime, while your child naps. They also help the room stay darker for longer in summer, so that your child doesn't wake up too early with the early morning sunlight streaming into his room.
