The original plantation shutters, as they were used in the early days in American history, were crafted from whatever hardwood could be found on the plantation. They were made to protection the houses from hurricanes and dust storms or other poor weather.
These types of shutters today are still often made from hard wood, such as cedar or Aldar wood. They are also made from a broad spectrum of other materials as well, including plastic, vinyl, and faux wood. Naturally, all wood plantation shutters are generally a bit more expensive than the other types of shutters, and oftentimes people will choose faux wood over real wood. One thing to be aware of though, if you are considering faux wood, is that it is actually often heavier than the original wood.
No matter what you decide to have your plantation shutters made from, the whole wood experience--whether real wood, or faux wood, is the best when it comes to plantation shutters. Real wood can crack, warp or fade but it is a lot easier to care for!
